MIssion

Our "mission" for writing our blog, Harmony Under Sail, is to create an outlet for useful information related to ocean cruising in a sailboat, as well as operating and maintaining a cruising vessel with environmentally responsible impact.  This information will include material on
  • Trip and cruise planning
  • Prevailing Weather and Sea conditions
  • Voyage experience
  • Anchoring and Mooring opportunities
  • On-shore Offerings
  • Boat Restoration experiences
  • Boat Maintenance and Boatyard issues
  • Gear Selection.
While the experiences we will write about will be centered around our Westsail 42 Ketch, Harmony, we believe that the information we share can be used by power boaters, too.

However, a prevailing guideline will be our considerations and efforts to cruise with an environmentally responsible purpose and wake.  These considerations extend to all aspects of boat operation and maintenance.  While we admit that we won't be able to completely eliminate usage of fossil fuels and other materials necessary for proper vessel operation and maintenance, our objective is to minimize our impact on the environment.

The terms "green" and "sustainable" are bandied about so frequently these days that their meanings and, quite possibly, their realities may well be diluted by overuse. We have chosen to look at our mission with a broader and, perhaps, more livable perspective.  What we do in our every day lives and, more specifically, our every moment on our boat can be done with environmentally responsibility consideration.

In our commentary, we will share our experiences with vendors, products, and materials.  We strongly believe in positive reinforcement for positive results, so our discussion will be focused on highlighting what we have considered good experiences and good vendors, products, and materials.  We will NOT denigrate or "bad-mouth" anyone or anything should we have a less than favorable experience.

Now, that does not mean that a healthy use of facetiousness may not enter into the mix.  However, any of this will done in good humor.

Our hope is to be able to share useful and helpful information from our experiences in a clear, actionable, and, possibly, humorous way.  We have often looked for this same material to help in our plans and adventures, but to also fuel the excitement we've been feeling in the process.  Our dialog, then, will endeavor to focus on where we're going, what we're doing, and why we're doing it.

Fair Winds and Following Seas!
